Virtual IO Module

The Virtual IO Modue, or VIM for short, is used as an interface to Industrial Ethernet devices for Emerson's DeltaV control system. The VIM supports a number of Industrial Ethernet protocols, such as Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP, by installing the appropriate firmware driver. A VIM can have only one firmware driver installed at a time, meaning that it only supports one Industrial Ethernet protocol at a time.

There are three types of VIM's:

  1. M-Series VIM, Manufactured by Mynah (Grey box);
  2. S-Series VIM, manufactured by Emerson; and
  3. M- and S-Series VIM2, manufactured by Emerson.

Types 1 and 2 are based on the DeltaV M5/M5+ CPU architecture. These have a single 10M Ethernet network for field communications and a serial port for VIM/VIM communications in redundant applications. The new VIM2 is based on the DeltaV MX CPU architecture. The VIM2 has two 100M Ethernet networks. One network is used for field communications and the second is for VIM/VIM communications in redundant applications. In all cases, the firmware for the VIM is created by MYNAH Technologies.

Upgrade from VIM to VIM2

All VIM types are functionally identical and backward compatible to a certain degree. The VIM2 (M-Series or S-Series) is designed as a drop-in replacement of the VIM. On replacement with a new VIM or VIM2, user must reload the configuration from the VIMNet Explorer. In redundant applications, both VIM modules must be replaced with VIM2s. A redundant VIM pair can be replaced online with VIM2 without disrupting field communications by using the Replace Redundant VIM with VIM2 guide.

This table can be used to determine hardware compatibility between the different types of VIMs.
